Felicia Nichols
Nurse Supervisor, Adult Mental Health, Crisis Care Center
What motivated you to become a mental health nurse?
While in nursing school, mental health was my absolute favorite subject. I began to learn that my own family struggled with mental health issues, and I wanted a better future for myself as well as my children. I noticed a negative “stigma” around mental health, and I would like to change society’s perspective.
What do you find most rewarding about your work as a mental health nurse?
Watching people be able to take over their own mental health and care rather than allowing mental health to take over them. I thoroughly and truly receive fulfillment when other people are healing and becoming “better” every day.
Why did you choose FCS?
My oldest daughter received services here many years ago, and I was very happy with the care provided in all aspects. My really good friend works for FCS on the PACT team, and she talked very highly of her team and how much she authentically loves her job! So, I had to check it out for myself.
How do you see the field of mental health nursing evolving in the future?
I see the negative aspects decreasing. I see hope and positivity for our younger generations. I see patients being treated as a “whole,” including their minds. I see more compassion and integrity driven nurses rather than pay or convenience driven.
