Dr. Michael Collins, MD
After graduating from high school, Dr. Michael Collins volunteered to join the United States Navy, proudly serving as an enlisted member. Following his honorable military service, he pursued higher education, graduating with honors and earning additional distinction in mathematics. His pursuit of academic excellence led to his induction into the national mathematics honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon.
Dr. Collins continued his education, attending medical school where he developed a strong commitment to psychiatry. During his residency training, he was selected from his resident cohort to work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Understanding this population’s vulnerability and need for compassionate care, Collins sought additional training and mentorship from senior psychiatrists in diagnosing and treating mental illness in the IDD population – training which enabled him to continue this work after completing his training.
Throughout his career, Dr. Collins served primarily in not-for-profit hospitals and community mental health centers, providing compassionate care to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness across the lifespan – including children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. In the past, he devoted significant time to consulting with multiple group homes, supporting staff and residents in creating safe, therapeutic environments.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Collins served as an associate and adjunct clinical professor, mentoring psychiatric residents and medical students. He also co-directed a specialized program supporting impaired professionals, providing guidance and care during pivotal moments in their careers.
His dedication and leadership in psychiatry have earned him national recognition, including being named one of America’s Top Psychiatrists and being honored as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association – a distinction awarded for excellence, dedication, and leadership in the field.
