It was a hot afternoon in August 2023 when we received a phone call from Tulsa Police Department about a woman in crisis who desperately needed support.
Melissa was living in an RV with no power, no water, no phone, and a handwritten sign taped to the door that read:
“Need help. Call police.”
She’d been beaten by her boyfriend and left with nothing but her dog, the one constant she refused to abandon. Our COPES crisis team acted quickly, helping Melissa find temporary shelter and making sure her beloved four-legged friend could come too. That simple act of compassion began a two-year journey of healing, trust, and transformation.
Melissa’s path wasn’t short or easy. She went on to spend nights under bridges. She was hospitalized after being attacked again. She was afraid, isolated, and unsure how to start over.
But our COPES team continued to reach out—with food, clothing, dog food, rides to appointments, and a voice on the other end of the phone when Melissa thought she couldn’t go on. Most of the 100+ phone calls to Melissa were not “billable.” They didn’t fit into a government program or a grant budget. But they mattered. Melissa said,
“You literally kept me alive for two years.”
Last fall, Melissa spent eight days in our CrisisCare Center getting the meds she needed and taking part in individual, group, and art therapy. It was there she found not only the courage to start fresh, but a calling to help others. After her discharge, she reunited with her father, entered sober living and earned her high school GED at the age of 47. She is now a college student with dreams of a career devoted to serving others at an organization like Family & Children’s Services.
When asked what made the most impact, Melissa simply said,
“You kept showing up.”
YOU are who makes it possible for our teams to go above and beyond for our clients—to keep calling, keep caring, and keep showing up for those who need help most.
Programs like our Community Response Team, COPES, CrisisCare Center, and Homeless Outreach Services receive little to no government or grant funding. They exist because generous donors like YOU believe no one should slip through the cracks of our systems. THANK YOU.
