Children's Mental Health

Serving children and adolescents, ages 4-17

"My teen group has helped me stay out of trouble. I've been going to school more and doing my homework. I was going through problems, but now I've learned to stop bottling things up and just let my feelings show. I don't think I would have made it this far without this group." - A youth involved in a life skills program

F&CS serves Tulsa's most at-risk children by offering outreach, prevention and intervention programs in schools, public housing complexes and low-income neighborhoods. Children's Mental Health Services address children who suffer from psychiatric or behavioral disturbances, have witnessed violence, experienced trauma, have learning disabilities or are homeless. Parents of these children are provided family support, case management and counseling services to promote successful outcomes. F&CS is a culturally competent agency, providing translation services as needed. Children's Mental Health Services includes the following programs:

School-Based Services - Our therapists and social workers assess mental health problems, implement treatment and link children and families to community services through early identification in Tulsa-area schools. Children with a variety of mental health therapy issues are offered anger management and skill building groups, crisis intervention, classroom consultation, and intervention and trauma services. F&CS is partnered with approximately 20 schools in the Tulsa, Jenks and Union School Districts, and is the Mental Health partner of OU Bedlam School-Based Health Clinics.

Child Psychiatry - Family & Children's Services established a Department of Child Psychiatry in 2006 to offer specialized therapy for children and adolescents with severe emotional disturbance and persistent disruptive behavior at home and/or in school. A staff child psychiatrist provides therapy, medication evaluations and pharmacy services at little to no cost to families.

Therapeutic Services – Clinic-Based / School-Based - Through our individual, family and group counseling and therapy services, clients will learn self-confidence, social competency, emotional functioning, problem-solving and other essential life skills. Group therapy includes skill-building, peer negotiation and anger management.

After-School Program - Children in at-risk schools participate in after-school tutoring, skill-building and recreation to complement their regular academic programs. Literacy and other educational services are available to families of participating children. More than 100 children participate in the 21st Century program at Mark Twain Elementary each year.

Supplemental Literacy Tutoring - Children at identified at-risk schools in grades Pre-K through 12 with learning disabilities and those not reading at grade level receive free after-school reading and math tutoring from a state-certified teacher through small-group instruction using The Reading Plus® curriculum and The Moving with Math® curriculum.

Families and Schools Together (FAST) - This national and international award-winning prevention program brings together parents, children and teachers for eight weeks of fun activities designed to build protective factors for kids and to empower parents to be the primary prevention agents for their children against substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, school failure, abuse and neglect, and mental health issues.

Family Support and Case Management - Parents of Children's Mental Health clients receive home visits, parenting education and training, basic needs assistance, counseling, referral for substance abuse and/or mental health services, and crisis intervention services. F&CS offers culturally competent services.
